How do you find the right drone for your construction project?

Construction project managers, task supervisors and safety coordinators have plenty of work on their hands when it comes to routine inspections, monitoring work progress and keeping everyone safe on the job while continuing to deliver their projects on time and on budget. When a product or service could effectively eliminate or reduce the time spent on daily, weekly, and monthly duties to support these efforts and reduce rework and risk, you might expect everyone to jump to the opportunity to be more efficient.

Technological advances have made drones a cost-effective tool for construction sites. Even though they may seem like fancy pieces of equipment, in recent years the use of drones in construction has become no more uncommon than a GPS rover but just as vital.

Choose drones capable of information modelling

Drone technology has also been shown to be helpful in building information modelling, or BIM, which is a digital representation of a facility or building’s physical and functional character.

For instance, Komatsu, a technology firm in Japan, has combined “Smart Construction” with Skycatch, a drone service provider located in Southern California. This project consolidates drone footage to create 3D job site renderings. Drones also allow valuable, informative comparisons between the BIM designs and the actual on-site construction. Because this IoT-enabled technology can be updated in real-time, alterations to the job site can even be analyzed on a minute-by-minute basis.

Select a model with good visual capabilities

During the handover process, drone imagery and the final product’s video can contribute towards a customer’s satisfaction with the work done. Data that has been obtained can also have commercial significance with regards to property management and maintenance, providing visual information on the building’s as-built condition to managers and owners.

In addition, heat leaks in a building envelope or along a long run of underground utility piping can be detected by drones equipped with thermal imaging functionality.

Image quality can also help with site inspections

Picture quality matters as stakeholders have become accustomed to photo-grade ortho or models. Oftentimes, these models are being used to share details of the development with inspectors as well, which means that having presentation-grade photos and videos may be essential.

Drones are effective at providing the building managers with a unique and consistent point of view to inspect their facilities. Project managers may conduct regular scheduled, automated inspections of their facilities and project sites for construction management.

Construction professionals could use drones to reconstruct 3d models and inspect locations of equipment as well as volumes of materials, such as gravel. These surveys can be conducted automatically with staff pilots or on a regular schedule. Not to mention, drones possess great potential for reducing costs of inspection and surveying, as well as maintenance costs.

Choose one with a flair for good aerial photography

The aerial view offers a unique, worthwhile perspective to your team. Supervisors can capitalize on the power of a high-resolution drone map and quickly catch or estimate whether issues with regards to site access, possible future drainage problems or health and safety vulnerabilities may come up. They can then more effectively communicate and resolve site problems with their team.

If you want to improve your project performance and keep track of project costs and schedule, you should carefully evaluate drones and aerial imagery capabilities. From the very first flight onwards, a drone can benefit every project site by bringing substantial value.

The rapid growth of the Internet of Things has made drone technology a cost-effective tool for construction sites. When it comes to your construction project, choosing the right drone is essential. Using the tips mentioned above, such as choosing drones capable of information modelling or those with good aerial photography capabilities can help your construction project succeed.
